Legendary broadcaster laid to rest in Westpark Cemetery

Much-loved broadcaster John Berks was laid to rest and his son Lance Berks shares what his father meant to him.

Mourners gathered at Westpark Cemetery’s Jewish Helping Hand and Burial Society to lay to rest the legendary broadcaster John Berks.

Berks passed away at the age of 80, and was a 702 radio presenter who served up a morning show full of laughter to his listeners through his prank calls on unsuspecting community members.

Speaking to the Northcliff Melville Times, his son Lance Berks shared that his father was a man who was deeply rooted in values and through all his fame always kept his feet on the ground.

“He was a larger than life character, had an imagination that was bigger than life and had a golden voice that he used to paint a picture in ways that could embody the character of the persona he wanted to capture and entertain.”

Above all else though and most importantly, John, according to Lance, was just an incredible father who loved and did everything in his will for his children. Lance added his father was a simple man who enjoyed the simple things in life. “He loved sitting outside enjoying the outdoors and was an introvert who enjoyed adding goodness to this world, helping people and bring smiles to their faces, making them happy.”

Lance hoped people would remember his father for the smiles he brought to them and the many mornings he entertained them. “For his children, for the wonderful father that he was, and all the good, and all the values he taught us. The principals and the things he embodied within my sisters and I and for just always being there for me as a father, he was just a great dad and kid from Klerksdorp.”
