It’s Youth Month and, as such, even more importance is put on the upliftment of youth within our various communities.
With this in mind, the City of Joburg will host a series of creative hubs throughout the month of June. A launch event was held in Melville recently to mark the coming events.
Deputy director of arts, culture and heritage for the city, Vincent Maumela, said it was quite critical for them to commemorate the historical events that took place on June 16, 1976 and, in doing so, outline the critical question of what that day means to today’s youth.
“We are having a lot social ills, our youth are part of the people greatly affected by unemployment and its important to align ourselves with plans that responds to social ills youth face.”
He explained the city came up with a line of activities that will run throughout the month, such as public arts tours, exhibitions, performances and storytelling sessions.
In planning these activities, the city focused on trying to find a conducive environment for the youth so they can better understand what arts, culture and heritage sector is all about and recognise the opportunities they can have in the sector.
“It is such a vibrant sector that the youth can tap into. We create a conducive environment where specifically our youth can try and get opportunities that allow them to create jobs for themselves and find things they can do.”
