Wits sees the best of tang soo do at training camps
Wits University was a buzz with shouts and cheers as martial artists competed in forms (kata), weapons and points fighting categories.
The only thing better than the turnout at the Alchemy Training Championships was the skill of martial artists.
The event brought together the tang soo do practitioners from both Alchemy’s Cresta and Wits University dojangs.
The university was abuzz with shouts and applause as there was competition across the forms (kata), weapons and points fighting categories.
“I did some judging at the competitions but I also did some training for some black belts from both groups to qualify as referees and corner judges,” said is seventh dan tang soo do and second dan haedong kumdo practitioner, master Gregory Hart, who is also head instructor at both dojangs.
“They did exceptionally well and I look forward to them overseeing some events in the future.”
He explained that the competition side of the event saw people as young as eight years old, up to 28, compete in the championships.
“Training was geared more toward white belts and seeing where they are and for them to build confidence. Some of these new students only started in April and already their quality of sparring was exceptional. But all ages and belts were present and competing, and it was great to see them in action.”
The dojang is now preparing for the Arnold Classic, which will be held in Ruimsig in June after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.
