Suspects’ shoes lead to more arrests in Brixton

The officer noticed that the shoes of this suspect were linked to a house burglary.

A Brixton Police Station officer’s discernment leads to the arrest of three suspected robbers.

While on duty on May 22, Detective Sergeant Quinton Maketekete conducted a routine visit to the police cells, there, he recognised one inmate, that he had arrested before, who was linked to an assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. While interviewing the suspect, the officer spotted the shoes the inmate was wearing.

These shoes were the exact colour and make that were mentioned in a statement in one of the case dockets opened for a house burglary that happened on May 21.

The detective sergeant asked the suspect where he had bought his shoes, a question that seemingly made the suspect quite nervous.

He shared exactly where he got them from, admitting they were taken from a house burglary that took place the previous day at a residence in Brixton and he was willing to show the officer where the other two suspects were.

The officer called the Crime Prevention Unit and asked them to assist him at the location. According to station spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff, on arrival at one of the locations, they identified a room where all the stolen items from that particular house as well items from other robberies were found.

In this room they found the second suspect with laptops, laptop speakers, cell phones and USBs. He was then arrested. The third suspect was picked up at his home address that was pointed out by the other two suspects. All three suspects were detained at the Brixton Police Station and went to Brixton Regional Court on May 24.

Acting station commander Lieutenant Colonel Logan Govender and the management extended their gratitude and appreciation to the officers involved in the arrest. These three suspects can also be linked to other cases and crimes reported in the area.

Maketekete is said to be the reason behind this success, ensuring the suspects were brought to justice for the crimes committed.

Other officers said to have gone the extra mile due to pure commitment in light of the increase in house burglaries over the last four months are:

  • Captain Musawenkasi Emmanuel Simelane
  • Sergeant Michael Queen Maketekete
  • Sergeant Rofhiwa Maeba
  • Sergeant Machuene Five Matu
  • Constable Mohammed Sadiq Titus
  • Constable Nhlakanipho Victor Nhlapho
  • Constable Obakeng Johannes Mosadi
  • Constable Mapome John Sefoloshe
  • Constable Gundo Brain Phophi.

“We appreciate these members’ efforts and dedication and their hard work inspire other members to work just as hard and to go the extra mile. We want to express our deep gratitude for the dedicated and work you do daily,” said Govender.

Govender concluded that the arrests in the Brixton policing area clearly indicates that the station is addressing the crimes that are reoccurring and affect the community at large.

“The station is committing itself to address these crimes, through uniformed members and detectives. The goal of the station is clear – unite against crime. We at Brixton believe the tide can turn on these crimes and progress needs to be supported. A small drop in ocean in still a drop.”
