Hefty tariff increases face Joburg residents

From July 1, City of Johannesburg residents will see an increase across tariffs such as property taxes, electricity, water and sanitation.

From July 1, residents will be expected to fork out more as rates and taxes will see an increase across the board.

This was according to MMC for Finance Julie Suddaby at the tabling of this year’s R77.3 billion 2022/2023 financial budget on May 25.

According to the MMC, she had the perception that residents were dissatisfied with rates and tariffs in general.

“Via the Integrated Development Plan process I found that there are a few key areas of concern. Mainly, residents are not averse to increased tariffs, but would like to receive value for money.”

With a 90% revenue collection target for the incoming financial year, Suddaby is certain it will go a long way in repairing the City.

The following tariff increases will apply from July 1, 2022:

  • Property rates will increase by 4.85%
  • Electricity will increase by 7.47%, which is a significant reduction from the increase in the previous financial year of 14.59%. This increase is determined by Nersa
  • Water will increase by 9.75%. This increase is also a passthrough cost from Rand Water
  • Sanitation will increase by 9.75%
  • Refuse increases by 5%

To assist residents, the city has adjusted its rebate structure for pensioners

“Income levels for pensioners will be increased from the lower amount of R10 783 to R11 305 and the higher amount from R18 481 to R19 377. This amounts to an average increase of 4.85%,” said Suddaby.
