Hospital teaches good hygiene

The hospital headed to a local primary school on World Hand Hygiene Day to educate them on clean hands.

Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital commemorated World Hand Hygiene Day.

On the day, which is annually observed on May 5, the hospital educated the Grade 1s of Coronationville-based St Theresa’s Convent School.

Communications officer for the hospital, Makhosazana Tsibu, said this year World Hand Hygiene Day was celebrated under the theme: Unite for safety: clean your hands.

This day is said to focus on increasing awareness by recognising the culture of safety and quality through cleaning one’s hands. Hospital staff educated the learners by demonstrating how to wash and clean their hands.

The children were encouraged to clean their hands at the right times and with the right products. Head of department for the foundation phase Nicole van Buuren said hand hygiene is important, and for the learners to be educated about cross infection and keeping clean, is a privilege to the school. She thanked the staff members of the hospital for creating awareness about the day.

Infection prevention and control practitioner Khanyisile Mthembu said, “The purpose of today was to teach schoolchildren about the role of infection and how to prevent cross infection.”

She added that health workers at all levels need to ensure awareness about the importance of cleaning hands is created in our communities so we can prevention cross infection.
