Brixton Police Station’s campaign to protect students

The stations' Social Crime Prevention Unit held a campaign that educated students on vigilance.

With students falling victim to criminals, Brixton Police Station’s Social Crime Prevention Unit together with other stakeholders conducted a crime awareness campaign on April 22.

According to the station’s Jeanette Backhoff, officers had one-on-one talks with the students and handed out about 250 pamphlets with safety tips and emergency numbers addressing crimes that affect them the most, such as house robberies, common robbery, theft of and out of motor vehicles as well as human trafficking.

“These types of crime awareness campaigns will be held on a regular basis at different campuses and schools around the Brixton SAPS policing precinct. Our students need to be safe and protected from all criminal activities but we as members of SAPS need their help by putting their own safety first and by protecting their personal belongings by properly safeguarding it and not advertising it to criminals,” she said

Backhoff added criminals took advantage and spotted opportunities very quickly and that was why so many students fell victim to crime. Most cases reported were due to negligence with house robberies occurring as a result of doors and burglar gates being left open. “Be warned that this is an open invitation for criminals.”
