Hoërskool Linden gives back

The school collected about 1 000 jackets that will be given to disadvantaged communities.

As the winter cold starts to sneak in, learners, parents and community members of Linden came out to support the annual ‘Baadjies-aan-bome/ Free on a tree’ movement.

Hoërskool Linden and their charity committee, Ukunaka, hosted the event on April 22. The school played a local host for the second consecutive year, while the project was also supported in several other towns and areas throughout the country.

The initiative was received with great support and enthusiasm by the school community and was a huge success.
The school collected around 1 000 jackets as well as numerous clothing garments and shoes on the day. “People in need of warm clothes were able to come and pick out jackets that were hung on the school’s sidewalk on Friday morning,” said Ané Groenewald, school marketer and communications liaison.

The jackets, clothes and shoes will be handed out to people in need in the school’s closer community, as well as those affected by floods in Durban and people from the Zandspruit informal settlement.
“As a token of solidarity, the learners also wore different jackets to school on Friday. The school would like to extend a word of thanks to the organisers and founders of this movement, as well as everyone who supported the initiative and made contributions. It is heart-warming to see how people give back with open hands and hearts to the school and community,” she said.
