Road users urged to obey the rules of the road this Easter holiday

The Automobile Association (AA) urges all road users to obey the rules of the road ahead of the Easter weekend.

For many South Africans, Easter is a special time of the year, and many families will be travelling across the country to get away and spend quality time with each other.

According to the AA, Easter is also a turbulent time on South African roads, with many crashes and fatalities over this period. Road users should be courteous to each other and arrive safely at their destinations and back home again.

The Association encourages the road users to follow these tips over the Easter period:

• Make sure your car is in good working order and that all of the vehicle’s components are working properly.
• Make sure all of your tyres are in good condition and have enough tread for your journey, also check if they are balanced and aligned.
• Make sure your wiper blades at the front and back work function properly.
• Rest well before a long journey, while you are on the road, take a breather every two hours or every 200km.
• Roads can be congested leave earlier or later for your destination to avoid holiday traffic if you can.
• Make sure that your insurance and AA membership fees are paid up in case you need to make that emergency call.
• Remember the rules of the road apply even if you are on holiday. Be courteous and patient with everyone that you share the road with.
• If no one will be home while you go on holiday. Make sure that there is adequate security so that all your belongings are still there when you come back.
