Brixton Regional Court to hear case involving dangerous trio

Police link several robberies and hijackings to a trio running amok in the area.

Most wanted suspects for car hijackings and business robbery are appearing in the Brixton Regional Court.

The Johannesburg District of the Police has linked various crimes to three of their most wanted suspects who will be appearing in the Brixton Regional Court.

This is according to Captain Xoli Mbele, who stated the three suspects [accused] Oriel Jacobs, Dylan Doubel and Brandon Kaas had been charged with car hijackings, possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, and business robbery, attempted car hijacking, pointing of firearm and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The incidents where these crimes allegedly took place date between November 2021 and February 2022.

Mbele said the suspects allegedly hijacked a black Toyota Run X in Coronationville on November 14, 2021. A couple was inside the vehicle when the suspects pointed a firearm at the occupants and instructed them to get out of the vehicle.

The suspects took their wallets and cellphones and fled the scene, but two of them, Jacobs and Doubel, were apprehended on the same day by Johannesburg Flying Squad inside the vehicle and an unlicensed firearm was recovered at Clairemont. Kaas managed to evade arrest and fled the scene while the other two suspects were also charged with possession of a hijacked motor vehicle.

A few days later Kaas and two other accomplices are alleged to have robbed a fast-food restaurant where an undisclosed amount of money and cellphones of the customers were stolen. Kaas was identified by one of the victims. On 25 November 2021, the trio is believed to strike again – this time attempting to rob a bottle store in Newclare.

Mbele said, “They entered the shop pretending to be customers; he (Kaas) took out a firearm and pointed it toward the cashier. Customers screamed and ran outside; Kaas was apprehended by the community and a toy gun was recovered. He managed to evade arrest again and fled the scene.”

On January 7, Kaas and two of his accomplices allegedly hijacked a silver Ford Figo outside Rahima Moosa Hospital. The victim was waiting for his girlfriend when the suspects revealed they were armed instructing him to get out of the vehicle. They drove off with a vehicle that was later recovered.

On January 17, another few cases were opened stating that Kaas had allegedly robbed a 31-year-old male known to him, using a firearm in Westbury. Fast forward a month and allegedly Kaas and two others hijacked a black VW Polo in a parking lot at Rahima Moosa Hospital.

Mbele said, “The victim was waiting for his wife when suspects pointed a firearm at him and instructed him to get out. They jumped inside and drove off; the victim screamed for help and security guards closed the gate. The suspects jumped out of the vehicle and fled the scene.”

Later that day the police received a tip-off from the community, leading to the arrest of Kaas in Westbury around 17:00. He tried to evade the police but they gave chase until he was cornered.

Mbele said, “Two of his accomplices are still at large and a police investigation is underway. We cannot rule out the possibility that more charges could be added against the suspects. All three suspects have appeared before in court and are remanded in custody.”
