Cartoonist looks to showcase his talents and collaborates with the community

WINDSOR – Art has always been an escape and now he hopes it can support him.

Self-taught cartoonist Musa Innocent Dlhudhlu has always had a passion for drawing and is ready to work with the community to make a difference.

Specialising in caricatures, he has a collection of drawings that speak on social topics affecting the community he lives in. These range from domestic violence and abuse, drinking and driving and education for children.

What makes Dlhudhlu’s talents and goals more special is the fact that he is homeless and residing at the homeless shelter in Windsor. He stated, “I came to Johannesburg in August 2020 looking for a job but struggled to, I ended up at the shelter where I was given paper and stationery and did my cartoons to de-stress. I now want to turn these into campaigns that will educate the young on life and my experiences of it.”

Dlhudhlu has been into the arts from a very young age as it was one of the subjects he excelled in. It has now become an escape for him but also a platform to show how he sees matters affecting people in this country and is confident he can help make a difference. He said, “I want to make illustrations for children and work with companies to share their message. Whether it’s a community newsletter or helping create images for business, I believe that I can take care of myself and make a change through my art.”

The people at the shelter have applauded his abilities and encouraged him to share this with the community around him. Dlhudhlu is grateful for the support and belief he has received from them.

Due to his economic struggles, Dlhudhlu relies on materials from the shelter which in many cases are the backs of used documents and pens and pencils the staff there can offer him. “I don’t have any equipment. I’ve been using one drawing pad for a while now and whatever pieces of old paper I can get. It would be appreciated if I could be assisted in getting the materials needed so I can do better drawings.”

He would also love to digitise his artwork and assistance in doing so would be welcomed.

Cartoonist Musa Innocent Dlhudhlu hopes his drawings can have a positive influence on the community he lives in.

Dlhudhlu pleads with those that can assist, to contact him. He is willing to commit himself to any project and is confident he will make a good impression.
