Sweet chords to echo in Berario

In previous years if you heard the sweet echoes of the piano, cello, harp or guitar coming from Berario Recreational Centre, then you knew it was definitely from Resonanze Music School.

Though the school, due to Covid-19 regulations, had to move their location for a while, now that regulations have eased, they will bring their glorious harmonies back to the centre where they should be. To share more on them is the school’s principal, Retha Delport.

She has been teaching piano for the past 21 years and fell into the career by total accident. “Someone saw me playing piano in the church band and just assumed I could teach. I was asked to teach one child, and from there my music teaching developed into my passion for life.” She added when one teaches something, it teaches them too. She opted to host classes at the recreational centre as she was looking for a venue to teach a handful of students, and the centre welcomed them and from then on they grew.

“I realise what a fortunate place it is to be, as you become part of such a wonderful community of a variety of activities, and getting to know the wider world within the Northcliff area.”

According to Delport, learning music is a wonder tool that can enrich persons both young and old. She thinks it can uplift, build confidence and all the while it creates a sense of well-being and belonging. Intellectually, she thinks it can stimulate the whole brain, advance concentration, mathematical understanding, develop aural perception and musical talent.

The pianist started with music lessons when she was about seven years old and from the start just loved the sound and stimulation it offered. “My absolute love came when I was older and experienced the wonderful fulfilment to play with other musicians and make music collaboratively.”

Delport’s favourite composer is Chopin, with his rich, harmonious music. “Yet, my favourite band is Cold Play, with their simplistic and catchy lines.”
