Residents urged to take precaution

JOBURG – Residents are urged to only out their refuse bins out on the morning of collection day and also remember to bring them in after the refuse has been collected.

Residents warned not to leave their refuse bins out for extended periods of time as trends emerge of criminals utilising them as ladders to climb over perimeter walls.

According to private security firm Fidelity ADT, residents tend to take their refuse bins out the night before refuse collection or leave them out throughout the day after the refuse has been collected.

“Residents are leaving their bins out overnight and criminals are using this as a ladder to climb over your perimeter wall, not only that but bins are also being stolen,” said the head of marketing and communications, Charnel Hattingh.

She added that the refuse bins are also being bumped over, blocking driveways, requiring residents to get out of their car to move the bins, exposing them to potential hijackings.

“Dustbins also provide a good hiding place for hijackers who may target residents returning from work in the evenings.”

Residents have been urged to only put their refuse bins out on the morning of collection day and also remember to bring them in after the refuse has been collected.

“If you are not going to return home at the end of a collection day, ask a neighbour to take your dustbin in.

“A dustbin left standing on the pavement is a dead give-a-way that there is nobody home.”
