Online fraud cases continued to be reported

FAIRLAND – A warning to be careful when exchanging money for goods and service on online marketplaces.

Fairland Police Station has experienced a number of cases being opened in relation to online fraud.

According to the station’s spokesperson Sergeant Michael Kgatla, this is one of the most frequently reported cases taking place in their precinct.

He said, “We are warning the public once again to be careful when purchasing goods and services on online marketplaces. We have received reports of people having their money stolen after being scammed and giving up their items after being given fake proof of payments.”

Although committed to investigating such cases, the station urged the public to be wary of these transactions and to look out for signs of this crime. The station offered a few safety tips in an attempt to reduce the chance of the public falling victim to such.

Fairland Police Station‘s online shopping security tips:

  • People are urged not to pay for anything sold online if they don’t have solid proof that it’s not a scam.
  • Phone the person who is responsible for the advert and ask if you can see the product first before any money is exchanged.
  • The public is advised to rather follow a cash-on-delivery ideology when it comes to purchasing goods online.
  • The exchange of money for goods should take place in a safe public place like a police station.
  • Property for rent needs to be verified by visiting the property before any payments or contracts are signed.
