A knife and packet of cannabis found on a learner during school search

SOPHIATOWN – Police urge learners to consider a future of fighting crime rather than taking part in crime.

Sophiatown police visited one of the schools in their policing precinct on February 11– suspected to have learners involved in illegal activities.

According to the station’s spokesperson Captain TJ de Bruyn, Major General Hendricks and members from the K9 and mounted units along with members from the Sophiatown Community Policing Forum conducted a school search to find drugs, weapons and any other illegal items.

Captain de Bruyn said, “The school was identified as a problematic school as the school principal stipulated the growing number of kids bringing weapons such as knives to school. There are also concerns that some kids might have some illegal drugs at school.”

During the search, one knife and one packet of dagga were seized. Major General Hendricks took the opportunity to address the learners and reminded them that their future is bright if they commit to studying hard and being disciplined while also encouraging them to consider a career in the police rather than a career of crime.

De Bruyn added the station will be planning a career day also for the school along with other programmes to combat crime among the youth in the area.
