Grade 8s’ Fledging Concert helps new learners become part of the family

NORTHCLIFF – Grade 8s are reminded that relationship building is one of the essential skills to learn.

Abbotts College Northcliff recently hosted their Grade 8 concert which helps integrate the newbies of the school into their culture and tradition while welcoming them to the school.

After weeks of planning and rehearsing under the supervision of the student progress leader, Bridget Phiri, alongside her Grade 8 mentor team of Tayyibah Khan, Bonisile Sithebe and Yonela Fuduswa, they were ready to take the stage and parade their collaborative efforts to the parents and staff members who were the audience on the night of the show.

Principal Izak Stander said, “The Grade 8 learners were split up into groups and were allowed the creative freedom to create a routine and rehearse it. This was done to exemplify the values and principles that the school prides itself on, values such as honesty, transparency, accountability, responsibility, integrity, individuality, and respect.”

The highlight of the night was the closing ceremony where learners were grouped up in twos or threes and were given a candle to hold up with their respective partners on stage. The selected partner was expected to form an academic friendship and a friendship of fellowship and kindness.

So, if one student is absent, then it becomes the partner’s duty to ensure that their friend does not fall behind academically and offer the simplest of outlets for communication and support where necessary.

Stander explained, “This fosters a sense of society within the school and ensures that our youth understands how to care for others amid caring for themselves.”

The student progress leader of the school shared a message with the Grade 8 class of 2022 reminding them that relationship building is one of the essential skills to learn as it fosters a sense of support and allows for us all to feel secure in knowing that we have someone to rely on.

The school also hopes that the learners can aid each other in providing a genuine sense of community in the school.
