What Scouts Rovers are all about

DELTA PARK – A sneak peak and taste into what being a Scouts Rover is all about.

Gauteng Scouts to attract as many people as possible to join their Rovers programme.

Rover Day 2022 is here and will be taking place on February 5 at Delta Park between 11:00am and 16:00pm. According to regional team coordinator Rover Programme Dawn Ledbitter, Rover Day is the day Scouts introduce and try recruit senior Scouts members to join their crews. It will be a day filled with fun activities which give a taste into what can be expected if you were to join one of the many Gauteng- based Scouts groups.
Ledbitter said, “This year’s Rover Day will see all sorts of fun activities like an aerial runway, chainsaw practice, Viking chess, pool noodle fights and funky knots practice as well as a tuck shop which is selling delicious food during the day.”

According to Ledbitter, Rovers is the final part of the Scout youth programme catering specifically for young adults between 18 and 30 years of age. Rovers is all about adventure, excitement, challenge, achievement and leadership and encouraged the public to consider joining. “Firstly, you are rewarded for the work you are already doing through the programme. Whether you are a sportsman, an arts and culture fundi, or a career-oriented person. The programme caters to such a wide variety of people, and anyone can move through this so long as their councils approve their activities. Secondly, the community is very close and through the events, you can grow a network of friends. Lastly, you have a group of peers you can run things past. As you grow in service to yourself, the movement, the community and in leadership, you have a good support structure the whole way.”
No previous scouting experienced would be needed to join the crew, just a commitment to fun, team work, development and discipline.

Scouts groups from across the province got the chance to engage and interact with one another along with the public which is always welcomed. Ledbitter concluded, “Last Rover Day saw some excellent activities like archery, catapult building, a water dunk, water balloon volley ball and so many more interesting and fun activities. Crews were wise and really enjoyed dabbling in their own bit of marketing by having posters, pamphlets and all sorts of interesting social media activities in order to engage its young audience. It was a huge success and we hope to keep the event running for many years to come.”
