Students bring traffic to a standstill

AUCKLAND PARK – Protesters vow to return on February 17.

Traffic at the intersection of Kingsway Avenue and University Road was disrupted when a group of 25 to 30 students took to the streets on February 16.

At around 12:00, the students gathered at the intersection blocking off the roads.

According to Brixton Police Station’s spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff, the students were protesting due to fee and registration-related matters at the University of Johannesburg.

Unconfirmed reports stated the protest was in relation to the university’s vaccine mandate.

Backhoff said, “The students closed off the road but no incidents of damage to property or any destruction had been reported so far. We were on standby with security companies to ensure law and order was maintained.”

Shortly before 14:00, the protesting crowd had left allowing traffic to flow once again.

“They told us they will be back early tomorrow morning [February 17] and therefore we are advising motorists to be careful and possibly find alternative routes to their destinations.”

She added that they would monitor the area and respond accordingly in the event of another protest.
