Getting Quava to the World Choir Games

BRIXTON – Get to know the Quava Vocal Group on February 20.

Quava Vocal Group is calling on the public to help get them to the annual World Choir Games in South Korea in July this year.

The coordinator for the group Sabelo Mthembu said, “The world choir games offer us an opportunity to participate in the world’s biggest choral competition. Taking part in this competition will give our choir great international exposure which will be a great achievement for us and for our country.”

To help the group of 40 South African singers who are passionate about the healing and transformative power of music, members of the public can support their crowdfunding campaign by making a donation to them on www.backabuddy.co.za/quava-fundraiser.

“Quava Vocal Group is a chamber choir based in Johannesburg and attracts singers from all parts of Gauteng. Our repertoire is influenced by western choral, jazz and African music.”

The group was formed in 2009 with the aim of presenting choral music with a classical/jazz and African influence. Since then, Quava has been invited to perform on Imizwilili, the SABC1 music television show, performed at the prestigious CFO Awards in 2018, and in June 2019, the group was awarded a Standing Ovation Award after their stellar performance in the National Arts Festival in Makhanda.

Quava also participated in the 2019 RMB Starlight Classics featuring the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra conducted by Richard Cock. “Our most notable achievement to date is winning two gold medals at the 2018 World Choir Games.”

To ensure the group raises the money to get to South Korea, they will host a Get To Know Quava concert on February 20 at Brixton Kerk. The show will give those that aren’t familiar with the beautiful and blissful sounds of Quava a taste of who they are and what they will be bringing to the World Choir Games.

“We haven’t been singing for almost two years because of covid-19, so we are looking forward to being on stage again but you can expect an enthusiastic choir that will present some songs that we will be singing at the world choir games and some beautiful uplifting African tunes.”

The Quava Vocal Group also encouraged the public to follow them on their social media pages to keep up with their activities:
