Councillor looks to deal with illegal traders

GREYMONT – The councillor urged residents to continue reporting illegal traders wherever they see it taking place.

Ward 86 councillor Chantelle Fourie-Shawe has noted the growing concern over illegal traders in her ward.

According to the councillor, the ward is still battling what many other areas across the city and country face. Fourie-Shawe said, “The most problematic areas in my ward are the corner of Lange Avenue and Gordon Road, Bergbron Drive, Long Road opposite the Greymont Shopping Centre and opposite Triomf Shopping Centre. I have been speaking to the relevant officials including the urban inspector and Metro police to issue them fines and warnings and to continuously monitor these areas.”

The councillor claimed that these traders often do not operate within the by-laws of the City. “I think the issue is that the municipality and other spheres of government don’t support these traders to make it easy for them to get licensed or trade legally. There is too much red tape and the government almost forces them to do it without the proper licensing.”

Fourie-Shawe noted that it is a divisive issue but stated the City is not opposed to people creating avenues of revenue for themselves. However, she urged that people follow the law and requirements as set out by the City. “We encourage these traders to get the necessary and correct permits and follow the procedures in order to run their business.”

She added that it does not mean residents are powerless and advised that they continue to report on this issue wherever they see it taking place. “Residents can empower themselves by reporting this and insisting that the City treats them with respect and the respect the issue deserves. The City is responsible to ensure that by-laws are being followed and illegal trading is in contravention of these laws.”

She added that the more issues are reported, the more pressure is applied, and the greater the likelihood of something changing.

Report cases of illegal traders to Metro police on 011 375 5911 and ensure you get a reference number.
