Tips on how to better take care of yourself like Steve Komphela

JOBURG – Physical exercise may seem like a challenge that not all of us may be up for, but it is essential to our overall well-being.

The start of a new year brings so much excitement, and after the festive season, you may be feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on new challenges and opportunities.

One of the most essential things to take note of as we begin 2022 is the importance of taking a break from the hustle and grind and making time to enjoy the simple things in life.

In-between achieving the goals that you have set for yourself, you will need to catch a breather and take a moment to unwind by treating yourself even if it’s something small such as grabbing a bite or a sweet treat.

To get more South Africans to treat themselves and take a little break, KFC launched the #ZiphatheGrand campaign featuring Mamelodi Sundowns coach and self-care expert Steve Komphela.

Through Ziphathe Grand, KFC is reminding South Africans to employ the “Original Recipe to Success” – to be kind to self and treat themselves to frequent small breaks. This could be through taking a walk, watching your favourite sport, or even a solo ice-cream date.

Take five minutes to unwind: Not taking a break can affect you physically and mentally leading to exhaustion, lack of creativity and it may put you in an unpleasant mood. Taking a 5–10-minute break when you’re working is a good way to recharge your batteries and stay energised.

You can use this time to go for a walk, catch up with colleagues or loved ones, listen to your favourite music, meditate, or grab a snack.

Move your body! Exercise has many mental and physical health benefits which help you to stay energised and productive throughout the day. You can start your day with a quick workout whether it’s a jog around your neighbourhood, a workout video, yoga, or some simple exercises in the comfort of your home.

You can also play your favourite sport with friends or family on the weekends. Physical exercise may seem like a challenge that not all of us may be up for, but it is essential to our overall well-being. Squeeze in a quick exercise and your body will thank you.

Get enough sleep: We’ve all heard the phrase “Grind while they sleep”. In reality, you need sleep to grind to the best of your ability. Getting enough sleep helps us to perform better during the day as it improves our mental and physical well-being allowing us to be more productive and creative. Be sure to get between 6-8 hours of sleep every night so you can be energised and take on the day.

Unplug: In this day and age, our gadgets are our most are crucial possessions, however, too much screen time can have negative effects on our health including physical strain to the eyes and lack of sleep. You need to unplug at least once a day and give yourself a break from the information overload. You can use this time to read a book, take a nap or do some work around the house.

A little something to lift your mood: Doing something that brings you joy is bound to get you in a better mood. Once a day, do something that makes you happy whether it’s watching an episode of your favourite series, spending time with your friends, enjoying some dessert, or dancing to your most-loved songs.

As we take on 2022, let us remember the importance of prioritising our well-being as we try to reach our personal goals. Amid the hustle and grind, take time for yourself, uziphathe grand.
