Young public speakers excel in annual speaking competition

NORTHCLIFF – The Northcliff Rotary Club recently held their annual public speaking competition where several primary schools competed for big win.

Northcliff Rotary Club in conjunction with Northcliff Primary School hosted the club’s annual public speaking competition.

The competition was open to Grade 7s of both public and private primary schools held at Northcliff Primary. Seven schools participated in this year’s contest – Constantia Kloof, Crawford Ruimsig, Montrose, Franklin D Roosevelt, Bryanston, and Trinity House Rand Park Ridge primary schools.

Rotary Club president Robert Jacobsz said this had been an annual event for the past 40 years and had become a highlight in the primary school calendar. He added this was indeed a milestone in the club’s history and said it was rather unfortunate that last year was the first time since the event’s inception that they could not host the competition due to the hard lockdown imposed.

The winner of the prepared speech category was Sanrika Matai of Bryanston Primary and the runner up was Danni Vermaak of Trinity House Randpark Ridge. The Impromptu category was won by Saien Moodley of Crawford Preparatory School Ruimsig and the runner up was Cameron Gaddin of Trinity House Randpark Ridge.

The winning school on the night was Trinity House Randpark Ridge and the English head at the school, Angela Cunningham was congratulated.

Chief adjudicator for the event, Brian Appleton of the National Eisteddfod Academy was impressed with the high standard and quality of the speeches presented by the participants. He said due to Covid-19 restrictions, many schools did not focus their efforts on this aspect of their schools’ curriculum and this was reflected in the turnout.

Northcliff Primary School’s principal, Debbie Smith was awarded a plaque as the winner of the 2019 competition.
