Jail time for 136 arrested over the weekend

JOBURG – Police make arrests across the city in connection with several crimes through the weekend.

Successful policing weekend for Johannesburg Central Cluster stations.

A total of 136 suspects were arrested between November 5 and 7 as part of the clusters crime combating operations for the weekend. According to the spokesperson of the Johannesburg Central Police Station Captain Xoli Mbele, suspects were apprehended for various offences around Mondeor, Sophiatown, Brixton, Fairlands, Langlaagte, Booysens, Moffatview and Johannesburg Central area.

He stated, “Among the suspects who were apprehended during the operations, five suspects were arrested for rape; one for house robbery; two for attempted murder; one for car hijacking; four for armed robbery; six for common robbery; 35 for contravention of the Disaster Management Act; two for dealing in drugs and 13 for possession of drugs.”

He added that the rest of the suspects were arrested for being involved or committing crimes ranging from assault common; assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm; theft, fraud, shoplifting, attempted rape, malicious damage to property; domestic violence; possession of stolen motor vehicle; possession of suspected stolen property; drunk and driving; drinking in public; selling liquor without a licence and perjury.

The Office of Johannesburg District Commander Major General Max Masha was proud of the results and hopes the police continue to work in and with communities to decrease crime levels. They have also reminded the public of increased criminal activity as we edge closer to the festive season and urged them to be vigilant and careful at all times.
