Farewell to Brixton’s Mrs Erasmus

BRIXTON – Those familiar with Mrs Erasmus know that she has been a part of the community since 1935 when she lived in Mayfair West.

The Brixton community along with the friends and family of Marie Erasmus, long time Brixton local, are in mourning following the passing of one of the oldest residents in the area.
Erasmus was 91.

Spokesperson of the Brixton Police Station Jeanette Backhoff said, “It is with a heavy heart that we share that Mrs Erasmus passed on 28 June and it has shocked the community and station. We are grateful to have met and had a relationship with this incredible example who had a positive attitude, bubbly personality and love for the community.”

On 12 September 2020, Erasmus celebrated her 91st birthday and the community helped make the day a special one. Those familiar with Erasmus knew that she had been a part of the community since 1935 when she lived in Mayfair West.

She previously said, “During those times, there was only one school in the area and the police station was in a different place.” In 1956, she moved to Brixton and has lived there since, seeing all the changes, good and bad. When asked why she loved Brixton she said, “This is my home, I’ve lived here for a very long time. The friends, people I know and those that help me are here in Brixton.”
She added that the birds she fed in her yard also made living in her home enjoyable.

Station Commander Colonel Mkhacani Maluleke, members of Brixton police, and the residents of Brixton and Northcliff Melville Times extends their condolences to the family of Erasmus.
