How to avoid an active crime scene in your car

FAIRLAND – Police urge the public to pick their safety over capturing videos and photos at active crime scenes.

Police share what to do if you find yourself in an active crime scene while driving.

Fairland Police are reminding members of the public that their safety comes before anything else when faced with an active crime scene. The police are aware of recent criminal incidents such as hijackings and Cash-in-Transit heists that potentially result in bystanders being involved in the chaos.

Spokesperson for the station Sergeant Michael Kgatla stated that in these instances the driver and all occupants of the vehicle should do all they can to stay out the way and safe.
Kgatla explained, “If you find yourself next to such crimes, the best thing to do is to turn around and drive in the opposite direction, but if that’s not possible, get down and cover yourself, but get out of the way. You could get shot and killed because these suspects are looking for the fastest way out and don’t care about you.”

Police also advised that if you find yourself with a crime taking place next to you and the suspects turn their attention to you, comply with them. Kgatla said, “If you don’t have a chance to get away and they want your car and property, just give it to them. These things are replaceable but your life isn’t.”

They advised that when complying, always show your hands and not to argue with the suspects. Police also urged members of the public to avoid getting closer to the scene to take photos and videos like that too is extremely dangerous. They stated that there have been cases in the past where such people were hit by stray bullets and other instances which ended with death.
