Orban School’s young MasterChefs

WESTDENE – The school recently held its annual MasterChef event.


It was a delectable day at Orban School when the Grade 3 class showed off their culinary talents.

The Grade 3 MasterChef cook-off is a hotly anticipated annual competition that learners and parents alike look forward to yearly.

Young chefs served up their best for this celebration, showcasing diverse food cultures and culinary talent.

This time around, due Covid-19 regulations, things had to be done slightly differently. Always keen to show innovation and creativity, the school made sure to stick within the lines while making it fun and exciting for the participants.

The theme for this year was: savoury/sweet in a bottle. This was done to ensure that all safety regulations were applied and each judge was presented with a packaged food to their taste buds to find great enjoyment in.

Chef André Brown, head chef at Greenside-based restaurant Clenergy, as well two of the school’s teachers, Simoné Fourie and Wilmarie Ochse-Heine, were the events adjudicators.

Certificate winners of the six categories were:

  • Best-tasting dish: Madison Voster, Kellan Erasmus, Jordan Evans, Sofia Jooma, Thomas Jordaan, Ntokozo Msimang.
  • Most original name: Mahdiyya Bhamjee, Alena Dell, Robert Petrie.
  • Most creative table setting: Muhammad Patel, Geovanno Tromp, Reynier van der Vyver, Rabiya Alma, Danny de Almeida.
  • Use of diverse food groups: Nin Brown, Umar Jogee, Jhondré Tools-Bernado, Salma Mehtar.
  • Most innovative recipe: Caitlin Kreusch, Ariana Alekar, Abdul Qader Noorbhai.
  • Best presentation: Christiana Adriaan, Zakhe Ntshangase, Cristiano Rhaganath.
