A hiker’s delight at the koppies

MELVILLE – You can enjoy the beauty of the environment around every Sunday at the Melville Koppies.

Melville Koppies Central proved to be a popular choice for kids wanting to celebrate Father’s Day with their special Dads on 20 June.

According to volunteer, Jenny Grice, with the third wave in Gauteng soaring, the koppies is a Covid-19 safe place where one can come in your family bubble, sanitise, sign in and then hike in your own group. “Numerous paths that criss-cross the 55-hectare reserve ensure that you are unlikely to come into close contact with another hiking group.”

She added that security is provided so that even women walking alone feel safe exploring, and if you buy a one-year season ticket, it means entrance could cost you just R10 each time you visit.

“You can be energetic and test yourself on the 5km hiking trail or sit down and relax on benches at the many viewpoints across the Koppies.” Although winter days might be cold, you’re almost guaranteed that it will be a sunny day and if there’s not too much pollution in the air, you might be able to see all the way to the Magaliesberg.

Melville Koppies Central (Nature Reserve and Heritage Site) is open every Sunday from 8am to 11.30am. No need to pre-book. Adults R80 and children R40; season ticket for a year per adult R500 (not transferable). All income used for maintenance and security of the koppies.
