As part of the Brixton Community Forum’s ‘Brixton Beautiful’ campaign, 30 residents came armed with shovels, scrapers and paintbrushes to get Brixton’s kerbs looking fresh and new.
Community members contributed to the costs of the stencils and paint, and a Melville paint store gave a generous donation of paint towards the project.
According to the forum’s chairperson, Sophia Weltz, painting kerbs is important not only because it makes their environment more beautiful, but having street names clearly marked makes it easier for people to find their way. “This makes people less likely to look lost and be more vulnerable to being victims of crime, also makes it easier for emergency services to find addresses quickly.”
Weltz explained it is both beautiful and adds to the safety of their neighbourhood.
