The Lions of Northcliff

NORTHCLIFF – The paper talks to Lions Club Northcliff to find out how the past 55 years have been for them and how they have impacted the community.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of Lions Club Northcliff being of service to its community and others.

The club’s president, Jean Thompson said they formed part of an international club that had a network of dedicated volunteers who worked together to fulfill various needs of the community.

At the moment the club has 11 active members and although they would love to recruit new members, it has proven to be quite challenging during Covid-19.

However, they still manage to be of help to others by assisting the hungry through food donations and organizing soup kitchens. “We arrange eyes glasses for those in need, test individuals for diabetes, and arrange projects to enable the physically and mentally disabled to have some fun,” said Thompson, adding they also raised their own funds to support these projects.

Prior to the global pandemic taking a firm grip on how social gatherings across all communities was held, the club participated in events such as the 702 Walk the Talk, Buddy Day and arranged their own book sales. “Sadly, after Covid-19, we have been unable to arrange these projects, and have sorely missed this one-on-one interaction with the people we care about,” she said with a heavy heart.

Thompson has proudly been the club’s president for two years and her term will come to an end on 30 June. Her efforts over the past two years have ensured that regular and special meetings have taken place and she also appointed various committees to plan for service and membership growth.

Unfortunately, one special meeting she couldn’t plan was the club’s big celebration of its 55th anniversary. Instead, they commemorated the day with a lovely relaxing lunch at a local restaurant.

She would love for people to consider becoming a Lion and truly make a difference in their community. “Please also support our projects by donating books for resale, food for the hungry, and clothing for those in need. At some point, all of us need a helping hand of some kind.”
