Lengthy jail sentence handed to Westbury gangster

SOPHIATOWN – Both gang members involved on September 2017 killings behind bars for the rest of their lives.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela and the Sophiatown policing precinct community were pleased with the Gauteng South High Court sentencing of Westbury gang member Kemal Zita.

According to Sophiatown Police Station spokesperson Captain TJ De Bruyn, the 25-year-old was found guilty on five counts of attempted murder, possession of unlawful firearms and possession of unlawful ammunition. He was also found guilty of aiding and abetting criminal activities committed for benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with any criminal gang. Zita was sentenced to two life sentences and 71 years’ imprisonment which will run concurrently.

Zita was one of two Varado gang members that shot and killed Raymond Jansen in September 2017 in Westbury.
In addition to killing Jansen, two other people were also injured in the incident. Two days later in Westbury, Faldeen Marks, a fellow gang member, and Zita fired shots that killed Ricardo Smith while injuring three other victims. Police arrested both suspects and the Provincial Commercial Crime Investigation Unit carried out the investigation, gathering the necessary evidence that led to the successful conviction and sentencing of the suspects.

Marks is currently serving 274 years in prison after he was convicted of numerous murders in relation to gangster violence. The known Cape Town gangster was sentenced in the same court in 2019.
