Covid-19: Muslim community urged to celebrate responsibly as numbers creep up

The total number of deaths has now reached 55 012, while the recoveries also continue to climb to a total of 1 520 878. There are currently 29 362 active Covid-19 cases in the country.

The National Department of Health has issued a statement wishing the Muslim community a safe Eid Mubarak, whilst encouraging them to celebrate safely.

Minister of Health, Dr Zwelini Mkhize said, “We celebrate Eid at a time when the world is faced with a major pandemic of devastating consequence to all. In South Africa, we are seeing a resurgence that could turn into a fully blown third wave. Having been through two devastating waves, we must work together to prevent history from repeating itself.”

Mkhize referenced the discipline exercised by the Muslim community during Ramadan in abstaining from food, drink and other pleasures, from sunrise to sunset, and urged them to draw from this strength in continuing the celebration of their religious holidays responsibly.

“I wish you happiness and prosperity from the bottom of my heart, and I pray that Allah makes our struggles meaningful, and answers our prayers as we fight this pandemic,” concluded Mkhize.

During the past week, the total number of Covid-19 cases in South Africa has reached 1 605 252, with many warning that the country is on the precipice of a third-wave. Gauteng makes up the biggest percentage of the total with 26.9 per cent of the cases, followed by KwaZulu Natal with 21 per cent and the Western Cape with 18 per cent.

The total number of deaths has now reached 55 012, while the recoveries also continue to climb to a total of 1 520 878. There are currently 29 362 active Covid-19 cases in the country.
