One person killed during student protest

JOBURG – The incident occurred on De Beers Street.

One person has been killed during the student protests in Braamfontein this morning (10 March).

Caxton Joburg North journalist Andile Dlodlo is on the scene and confirmed the fatality. 

Emergency services and the South African Police Service (Saps) are also on the scene. 

Social media reports initially surfaced about the fatality, suggesting that the deceased was caught in the cross-fire between police and the students. Spokesperson for the Hilbrow Police Station Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo confirmed that the victim is not a student. 

Netcare 911 media liaison Shawn Herbst released a statement saying, “On arrival, the patient was found unresponsive on the pavement. A Netcare 911 Emergency Care Practitioner assessed the man however he showed no signs of life and sadly declared deceased.”

It has been alleged that the victim was on the way to the doctor.
