Looking back at 2020 for COJ’s Health and Social Development dept

JOBURG – Covid-19 is still very much a part of us says Health and Social Development MMC as the festive season nears.

The City’s Health and Social Development Department is confident they passed the tests thrown at them by the Covid-19 pandemic.

After months of educating the masses about the disease, hosting awareness campaigns, providing water tanks, masks, sanitisers and soaps, sanitising taxi ranks and schools, and keeping all their workers safe, MMC of the department, Sibongile Eunice Mgcina reflected on the efforts of her office.

“All these activities helped us buy time and prepare for the worst. Had we not done all of these things, we would have been in a far worse situation in terms of Covid-19 infections than we currently are experiencing. We are not out of danger yet, but we now have protocols in place to help us cope better,” she said.

Mgcina added that it felt really great to have finally made it this far. “This year has been a particularly challenging one, not only for us as South Africans but for the whole world. We were really challenged by the Covid-19 pandemic but we have since prevailed and this is a true testament to the indomitable spirit of resilience that we possess as human beings.”

Mgcina gave thanks to the business community and individual donors who donated food stuffs, sanitisers, masks and various other essentials which helped ease the burden on the City’s very scarce resources.

As families get together to celebrate the festive season and reflect on the year that was, Mgcina wished the residents of Johannesburg a blessed year-end with a necessary holiday reminder.

“I wish all the citizens of this great world-class African city happy holidays. They must be safe and should act responsibly at all times. Most importantly, people should not drink and drive as this causes unnecessary accidents that put a strain on our health services.”

The rules, regulations and safety guidelines, including the washing of hands, sanitising, social distancing and wearing a mask were still in place and should continue to be adhered to as Covid-19 was still very much a part of us, Mgcina concluded.
