Argentinean Association to share South American art, photos and doccies with the public

EMMARENTIA – Residents have been invited to explore the paintings, photography and short films of South American artists.

The Argentinean Association of South Africa (AASA) will be hosting their 2020 art exhibition, FLUX: Reflections on Movement and Longing, between 6 and 8 November. The event was cancelled in March due to Covid-19. Now that the country and the world is a better and handling the virus, the association is looking forward to hosting a three-day exploration of artworks, documentaries stories from Latin American artists at their Marks Park Sports Club.

According to Oriana Perez Casanova, member of the association and one of the artists who will have their work on display, FLUX will be based on personal experiences and previous projects followed by a traditional and mouth-watering Argentinean braai on the final day.

The Johannesburg-based artists will share work that spans from the Chilean island of Chiloé to the migrant hub of Agadez (Niger) in the Sahara desert and the European frontier territories of Lampedusa and Melilla. Casanova said, “Through paintings, photography and short films, three South American artists interrogate the notions of exile and movement, the implications of migration and its effects on the way we relate to what is left behind.”

The Argentinean Association of South Africa is an educational and cultural heritage not-for-profit association. The association offers Argentinean cultural events, dancing, singing, and other outreach programmes in the greater Johannesburg region. Chilean artist Casanova will be joined by Colombian photographer Salym Fayad and Argentinean photographer Marcelo Argañaraz.

Having left Chile at nine years old, Casanova’s work is inspired by her memories of home, her feelings of nostalgia for her country of birth and the struggle of the indigenous communities to save their forests and the distinctive, historic architecture of the Chilean island of Chiloé.

Fayad will share his experiences of travelling and working in Sub-Saharan African countries documenting issues related to popular culture, arts, conflict, migration and human rights. In FLUX he will present a series of photographs focused on migration and movement in the Sahel region, its challenges and disruptions.

Argañaraz has travelled and lived on different continents for the last 30 years. Focusing on diversity, he has documented the journey that migrants make into different regions of our common home searching for their own dreams paying special attention to places like Lampedusa, Ceuta y Melilla.
