BRIXTON – During an argument, avoid areas in the house where weapons or dangerous objects might be available such as knives and other sharp objects.

Police share safety tips on how to deal with domestic violence at the moment.

Domestic violence is a major issue in South African communities mainly affecting women and children. As Domestic Violence Awareness Month comes to an end, unfortunately, there will still be thousands of vulnerable people abused by those close to them. Having to help victims of domestic violence, Brixton Police Station is fully aware of the reality and decided to share safety tips with victims of such.

  • Brixton Police Station safety tips to keep in mind if you are in a domestic violence situation:
    During an argument, avoid areas in the house where weapons or dangerous objects might be available such as knives and other sharp objects
  • If you know there is a firearm in the house make sure it is locked away in the safe
  • Know where there is a safe exit from your home such as a window that can be used as a quick exit if you are in danger
  • Talk to neighbours about your situation and ask them to phone 10111 if they hear a disturbance
  • Have a cell phone with all emergency numbers hidden and make sure it is always fully charged and ready to be used
  • Prepare and have on standby a trustworthy and safe place you will be able to go to if you ever decide to leave
  • If you leave, make sure you have all your personal documents in you possession such as Identity Documents, birth certificates of the children, bank cards, medical aid cards and others.

Brixton Police Station spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff reminded victims, “Remember you are strong, powerful and valuable, whatever you are facing can be overcome as long as you take the first step.”
She pledged the full support of the station to anyone looking to take action against domestic violence. She encouraged the community to continue to work together to locate, help and support victims of domestic violence.
