GFIS arrests bogus City employee for stealing 60 computer hard drives

BRAAMFONTEIN – The woman is said to have been posing as a City of Johannesburg employee and is alleged to have stolen 60 computer hard drives from various work stations at the City offices in Braamfontein.

The City of Johannesburg’s City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service department (GFIS) arrested a 36-year-old female suspect on Saturday, 17 October.

The woman is said to have been posing as a City of Johannesburg employee and is alleged to have stolen 60 computer hard drives from various work stations at the City offices in Braamfontein.

The Strategic Stakeholder Management Group Forensic and Investigation Services director Lucky Sindane said, “On Thursday, 14 October, GFIS was notified of suspected theft and damage of computers from a number of departments including Town Planning, Municipal Courts and Group Legal and Contracts. The suspect gained access to the building by giving security personnel false information including a SAP number.  Her movements were spotted on the CCTV footage.

“The suspect was again seen yesterday moving around the building carrying a bag with tools.   A search for her begun and she was caught allegedly trying to break into the Legislature Offices by breaking the main door which leads to the offices.  She was then arrested by the members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD),” said Sindane.

Sindane added that she was questioned, confessed to the crime but gave the team a wrong residential address. A correct residential address was later obtained and the property was searched but nothing was found.

“The City would like to encourage people to report any fraud and corruption activities through our 24-hour tip-off hotline 0800 002 587 or visit the GFIS offices situated at 48 Ameshoff Street in Braamfontein,” concluded Sindane.
