Melville’s very own neo-soul, Afropop and poetry songbird
MELVILLE – The EP and her single is on all music streaming platforms and she has encouraged the public to follow her on social media to see and learn more about her and her music.
Lolo Skai promises a groovy music and enchanted storytelling at this year’s Blooming Sound from Joburg.
The Melville-based Lolo Skai hit the Blooming Sound from Joburg stage on Heritage Day. She was selected as one of six artists to feature in the event and described the feeling as unreal when she was informed of her inclusion. She expressed, “I was very humbled to receive such a validation of my work, as an upcoming artist it’s hard to find such platforms that allow you to just perform and tell your stories authentically so this was a breath of fresh air.” Excited to bring Joburg into her world of music, she promised a performance filled with groovy music and enchanted storytelling and delivered exactly that.
Born and raised in Zimbabwe, her love for neo-soul, Afropop and poetry began at a very early age. By the time she was in primary and secondary school, Lolo jumped at every opportunity to entertain people and recite poetry. She explained, “I fell in love with music right from the jump, I was that kid that would want to perform for the family at birthday parties, holidays and pretty much anywhere I could.”
At the age of 17 she participated in the National Eisteddfod Arts competition where she received an honour’s award for the best female vocalist under 30 and has been performing ever since. She has been influenced by the talented, hardworking and beautiful black female artists such as Erykah Badu, Etta James and Lira. As she grew more into the neo-soul and Afropop, she learnt how to fuse them with poetry to deliver a unique music experience.
Lolo has already composed, written and released her debut EP titled, Lavender Graffiti, and described it as one of the proudest moments of her career so far. She added, “I recently released my debut single, Angidingi, from my first EP and it is available on all social media platforms. I’m excited to release more of my music at the end of the year. Stay on the lookout for that.”
