Teamwork leads to convictions

BRIXTON – No time to celebrate for police as they move on to reducing the next crime issues in the community.

Three convicted to 15 years each for business robbery that took place in May.

Brixton Police Station is happy to see their hard work rewarded as they recently helped put three men behind bars for the next 15 years. According to the station’s spokesperson, Jeanette Backhoff, the three accused were arrested for business robbery on 28 May when they robbed a paint store. It was thanks to the team work between Brixtonpolice, Johannesburg Central police and the Joburg Trio Task Team that made these convictions possible. Backhoff expressed, “Management of Brixton SAPS is very thankful to all role players involved in this case. All departments involved committed themselves to the case and another case went successfully through court.”

Information from the robbery was followed up on by members of the Johannesburg Central Police Station which resulted in the discovery of two firearms and four live rounds along with a reflector jacket and false registration plates for the blue Toyota Corolla that was used to commit the crime. The suspects, aged between 30 and 40, were charged with being in the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and business robbery. The case was handed over to the Joburg Trio Task Team for further investigation and ultimately the 15-year convictions followed.

Brixton police also held a crime prevention operation on 11 September in the hopes of curbing three crimes on the rise in the community. Backhoff explained, “Street robberies, house robberies and theft of and out of motor vehicles are a huge concern in the Brixton policing precinct.”
During the operation police held a road block to check for possible stolen vehicles and people were stopped and searched to check for drugs, unlicensed firearms and possible stolen property or items.
Backhoff added, “The Brixton graveyard is also a haven for criminal activities therefore patrols were also done there and all people loitering around the graveyard were questioned and searched if found to be suspicious.”

The station is requesting the public to be vigilant at all times and to make sure their property is safeguarded at all times. “Please be safety conscience and let us not fall victims of crime because we are negligent,”Backhoff concluded.
