De La Salle Holy Cross College helps bring water to a Soweto daycare

VICTORY PARK – A tap was recently installed which now help the children keep their hands clean in this crucial time.

De La Salle Holy Cross College alumni and McDonald’s Victory Park teamed up to sponsor the installation of a tap at a day care centre in Motsoaledi near Soweto.

The tap was installed a weekend ago as it is essential that during the Covid-19 pandemic, little hands manage to keep clean. This is not the only great feature the school can expect, a container which will be converted into a library for the children has also been recently installed.

This centre, which is said to provide a safe place to play and enjoy a daily meal, caters to about 150 children. This initiative was started about 16 years ago by ‘Gogo’ Muriel Maseko who made sure she provided a safe space for the children in her community. She sadly passed away about five years ago.

Ian Nettleton, a past learner and now parent at the school said, “I first met Gogo 15 years ago planting gardens with my daughter Hope. We struck up a bond very quickly and she was selfless to a point of pain, as she kept nothing we gave her and gave everything away to the kids of the community.” He added that they first assisted the centre with bread rolls for the soup kitchen on Saturdays for about 50 children. “Now with assistance from various partners and NGO, Build the Future, 150 kids get fed every day except Sunday.” Nettleton concluded that after Gogo’s passing they continued to do everything in honour of who she was.

Any donations of children’s books, puzzles or educational toys will be most welcome for the library. To find out how you can assist with this contact marketing@dlshcch.co.za
