Learners at Northcliff High School have taken care of their own during the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing lockdown.
The school has been collecting, sorting and delivering donations to families of learners in need since 24 April.
While initially the community donated food hampers, this later turned into monetary donations which learners used to buy food and necessary household items.
“We have been using a coffee shop as storage for all these items because the shop has been closed,” explained the school’s head boy, George Devenish. “We then sort and deliver items like jam, rice, pilchards, oats, mealie meal, toilet paper, baked beans and oil.”
All of this has been done safely with learners sanitising and wearing face masks and gloves when sorting or delivering items.
Devenish thanked the community for their support and asked them to keep donating, as many families have been hit hard financially during the lockdown. The initiative was started by the school’s parents’ association, which included the school’s care team and head councillors. The group has delivered these items as well as data and airtime.A fundraiser for the initiative saw the community exercising on Mandela Day, 18 July, by running, walking or cycling 6.7km or 67 minutes.
The Mandela Day Run saw people exercise wherever they were able to, and pledge R67 or a multiple of that amount to this good cause.
