Doctors at Charlotte Maxeke can squeeze in comfortable rests

With the massive amount of work required in dealing with Covid-19, doctors will need a break from time to time, and two companies have donated generously towards that cause.

Staff at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Parktown have been provided with much needed equipment. On 28 April, Hirsch’s Centurion and Hisense combined resources and put a collection of items together to give to the hospital in Parktown.

“We discovered that a lot of the hospitals didn’t have proper rooms for the doctors to rest in in-between shifts and because the doctors didn’t want to travel, they were actually sleeping at the hospital, and of course, there [were] no beds for them.

“We discovered that at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, when the doctors came off their shifts they would literally sleep on the floor because they had nowhere else to sleep,” Hirsch’s director, Margaret Hirsch said.

She added that they teamed up with Hisense and donated 10 000 masks and gloves. They also found two rooms that the doctors could use as recreation rooms. She said, “So between us and Hisense we organised the donation of two bar fridges, two TVs, two microwaves, coffee machines, couches, coffee tables, carpets, cushions and more. So at least when the doctors go off duty, they have fresh masks and gloves and they have somewhere to rest and relax between shifts.”

Hirsch said she was thrilled that her team, led by branch manager Mark Duckham, had actually gone into the hospital ato help the doctors.

Clinical head of Charlotte Maxeke Accident Emergency Department; Doctor Feroza Motara said, “It is with huge gratitude and appreciation that I say a huge thank you to Hisense and Hirsch’s. Your very generous donation will facilitate staff and patient safety during the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. The refurbishment of the tearooms will allow staff to take a much-needed rest in comfort, which is an essential part of preventing staff burnout and exhaustion.”
