MECs deployed to ensure lockdown rules are respected in Gauteng

The visit was part of the provincial government's plan to deploy MECs across the five regions of Gauteng to ensure that Covid-19 regulations relating to public spaces such as malls were being adhered to.

Gauteng Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Lebogang Maile visited Alex Mall earlier today, 13 May. The MEC, accompanied by representatives from the health department and City of Johannesburg, was taken on a tour by mall management which aimed to highlight the steps the mall had taken to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.

The visit was part of the provincial government’s plan to deploy MECs across the five regions of Gauteng to ensure that Covid-19 regulations relating to public spaces such as malls were being adhered to.

WATCH MEC Maile explain his visit to Alex Mall:

Health MEC Bandile Masuku accompanied the Premier, David Makhura on an inspection of the Soshanguve Mall in the north of Pretoria while MECs Panyaza Lesufi and Faith Mazibuko visited Thabong Mall in Sebokeng.

The MECs all delivered a strong message that shopping centres must encourage customers to wear face masks at all times when shopping, and to be meticulous about practising social distancing. Information pamphlets were distributed to members of the public to drive home the message. A stern warning was also issued that stores found not adhering to the rules allowing them to operate would face the full might of the law.
