Denny Mushrooms awards Melville’s Split Milk R10 000

The initiative was launched soon after the Covid-19 lockdown began, in an effort to get communities to support their local restaurants.

A number of local establishments have featured in the top 5, with Spilt Milk coming out on top of the Denny Mushrooms #SupportYourLocal campaign.

In April, Denny Mushrooms hosted the #SupportYourLocal campaign where restaurants participated by registering on the website and encouraging supporters to assist them in the form of votes, as well as pledging funds to their respective crowdfunding account.

Of the 123 entries, Melville’s Spilt Milk came out on top and will receive R10 000 prize money and 3 months’ supply of Denny mushrooms.

Spilt Milk owner Jack Landon expressed, “We are very appreciative of the platform that Denny Mushrooms created and all the good will. The struggle is real, so receiving the cash prize and the mushrooms is great.”

The initiative was launched soon after the Covid-19 lockdown began, in an effort to get communities to support their local restaurants. This industry has been dealt blow after blow since President Ramaphosa declared a national State of Disaster.

Prior to a complete shutdown, restaurants had to operate under strict rules including capacity limits and alcohol restrictions, not forgetting their financial commitments such as rent and staff salaries. As the country moved down to level four of its lockdown, such restaurants can only operate by selling their food via online delivery platforms. Another Melville restaurant, Love Me So, also featured in the top five restaurants.

The four runners up included Love Me So in Melville, Feta & Olives in Cresta, Olives and Plates in Johannesburg and Concha Café in Ballito, Kwa-Zulu Natal. These restaurants will also receive a three months supply of mushrooms as their prize.

Whilst voting is closed, www.dennysupportyourlocal.co.za will continue to provide an avenue for people to support their favourite restaurants. Simply go to the site to donate and #addgoodness.
