Covid-19: Total infections surpass 10 000

South Africa had conducted 341 336 tests, including 17 257 tests in the preceding 24 hours, a record high for a 24-hour testing cycle, said the department. 

The Department of Health has announced an increase in the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Africa. As of 10 May, the number of infections stood at 10 015 with the number of deaths nationally rising by 8 to 194. Three of the deaths recorded were in the Western Cape, 4 in Gauteng and 1 in the Eastern Cape.

The Western Cape and the Eastern Cape combined make up 84 percent of the new cases.

Provincial breakdown of positive cases:

Gauteng – 1 952
KwaZulu-Natal – 1 353
Eastern Cape – 1 218
Free State- 135
Mpumalanga- 61
Limpopo – 54
North West – 45
Northern Cape – 29
Total – 10 015
