Upcycle Store sells masks made from recycled materials

GREYMONT – Local zero waste store makes masks from recycled cotton as a reminder to keep your distance.

The Upcycle Zero Waste to Landfill Store opened its doors in October last year, recalled owner Winnie Mchenry. The store’s headquarters is located in Greymont, however, their services are not limited to the store. Upcycle operates in various communities all over South Africa.

The store’s services include giving unemployed citizens an opportunity to be taught and trained to make products from waste. The store has served as an outlet for some of the products made with recyclable materials. There is also a website where customers are able to purchase corporate gifts and orders. This website helps to keep the communities and their various projects funded.

Currently, Upcycle has been involved in a project to manufacture masks. The organisation have made the masks for people to use when going out to the shop or are working with hospitals to care for sick patients. These masks ensure that they do not cough on others while in the hospital for support.

These masks are double layered and are made from 100 per cent cotton T-shirting as well as a cotton layer. The masks are locally produced and can be ordered by email. They mostly serve as a reminder to keep your distance in this time.
