Covid-19: Top virus hotspots in Gauteng revealed

Johannesburg residents account for 59 percent of all positive Covid-19 cases in Gauteng.

The Gauteng Health Department on Wednesday afternoon released statistics indicating  the coronavirus hotspots in the province. As of 21 April, Gauteng had recorded 1 199 positive Coronavirus cases, with 781 patients having recovered.  Currently the province had 411 active cases and seven people had died. Johannesburg residents, it said, accounted for 59 percent of all positive cases.

The number of positive cases per district as at 21 April:
Johannesburg – 712
Ekurhuleni – 257
Tshwane – 125
Sedibeng – 11
West Rand – 40
Unallocated cases – 54 (cases yet to be allocated to one of the five districts).

The top 10 regions with confirmed coronavirus cases as at 21 April:

  • City of Johannesburg, region E
    227 positive cases
    Includes Alexandra, Wynberg, Sandton, Orange Grove and Houghton.
  • City of Johannesburg, region B
    140 positive cases
    Includes Randburg, Rosebank, Emmarentia, Greenside, Melville, Mayfair, Northcliff, Parktown and Parktown North.
  • Ekurhuleni North
    105 positive cases
    Includes Kempton Park, Edenvale, Tembisa and Bapsfontein.
  • City of Johannesburg, region F
    93 positive cases
    Includes the inner city and Johannesburg South.
  • Ekurhuleni South
    73 positive cases
    Includes Alberton, Boksburg, Germiston, Katlehong, Vosloorus and Thokoza.
  • City of Johannesburg, region A
    70 positive cases
    Includes Diepsloot, Kya Sands, Dainfern, Midrand, Lanseria and Fourways.
  • Ekurhuleni East
    55 positive cases
    Includes Springs, Benoni, Brakpan, Kwa-Thea, Tsakane, Daveyton and Wattville.
  • City of Johannesburg, region G
    50 positive cases
    Includes Orange Farm, Wellers Farm, Ennerdale, Lenasia, Eldorado Park and Protea South
  • City of Johannesburg, region C
    44 positive cases
    Includes Roodepoort, Constantia Kloof, Northgate, Florida and Bram Fischersville.
  • City of Johannesburg, region D
    39 positive cases
    Includes Doornkop, Soweto, Dobsonville and Protea Glen

The testing, screening and contact tracing of those who had tested positive had also provided important numbers which helped clarify the province’s efforts in containing the virus. From the 7 013 contacts traced who had been in contact with Covid-19 positive patients, 2 973 had completed the 14-day monitoring period with no symptoms reported and they had now been de-isolated.

The department added that the allocation of Gauteng cases to respective districts was still ongoing.
