Covid-19: Images of a CBD under lockdown

Rules and regulations of the lockdown being adhered to by most in the economic capital of the country.

South Africa’s lockdown was meant to help #FlattenTheCurve and it looks like it has achieved that but it’s doing so while challenging every citizen in the land. President Cyril Ramaphosa has been pleading with people to adhere to the rules and regulations of the lockdown, including staying home. For some this is a difficult task to carry out due to the socioeconomic realities of South Africa. Such difficulties and challenges are being experienced in the Central Business District (CBD) of Johannesburg.

Being the centre of the city, there was bound to be some sort of activity. People roaming the streets were mostly seen near or around grocery stores. Public places such as parks and city buildings were deserted with only the relevant security guards on-site at the time. There was a good number of police and Metro police visibility throughout town. At various intersections the police would stop and question people on why they are outside, while also ensuring that all stores and informal traders are only selling essential goods.

Informal trading is a means to a meal for many in town and many of these continue to hit the streets to try get an income for the day. The usual cell phone-related sellers, on-foot snack sellers, and fast-food establishments were closed with those selling fruit and vegetables and other foods still operating. Unfortunately due to the lockdown, there are not as many people out there to purchase those goods but there were a good number of people buying such throughout Jozi.
