The work that awaits ward 99 councillor at COJ

WARD 99 – Councillor to adopt all she learns from her new shadow cabinet role.

Councillor Nicole van Dyk dives into what her new responsibilities will be as a shadow MMC.

Ward 99 councillor Nicole van Dyk is one of the chosen few that will represent residents in the Democratic Alliances Shadow Cabinet in the Johannesburg City Council. She expressed her pleasure in being trusted to fulfil such a role for her party, community and city. “It’s an incredible honour to see my party have so much faith in me to fulfil the very large role in the City of Johannesburg. I will do my best every day to show them that this confidence is not misplaced.”

The new role is certain to come with new responsibilities and Van Dyk hopes to learn from each one. She explained, “The role does oversight of City Power, Joburg Water and Pikitup, and as a ward councillor, I encounter these entities daily, seeing both their successes and where they can improve. I hope to use that knowledge to help empower these entities and strive for better service delivery in the City of Johannesburg.”

In general, she will be ensuring that MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Mpho Moerane will be held accountable while also offering him any support he may need to better the life of citizens.

Van Dyk’s role requires much oversight and a fair amount of action. “That action takes the forms of questions to the council, and the hope is to get an honest and fair response from an opposition that will often make the picture look better than what it is.”

Van Dyk added that this is necessary to guarantee the betterment of our City.

Prior to accepting the role, Van Dyk had to make sure that she could be the new shadow MMC and serve her residents. “It was not a decision I took lightly at all when I got the call I asked for three days to make up my mind. This was to ensure that I could continue serving my residents as well as fulfilling my new portfolio.”

The councillor can’t say for sure that there won’t be any problems in attending to the two. In fact, she believes that may even make her more effective as she will get a deeper understanding of the struggles and achievements of these entities. Van Dyk has vowed to continue working in her community as she always has.
