WATCH: Ward 98 councillor appeals for homeless support

WINDSOR – Beverley Weweje is appealing for community help to support homeless people who will be using the Windsor East Recreation Centre.

Ward 98 councillor Beverley Weweje is appealing to the community, NGOs and businesses to help support numerous homeless people who will be using the Windsor East Recreation Centre as an isolation site during the coronavirus lockdown.

“The recreation centre has been identified by the government as an isolation site, and we do have challenges at the moment,” said Weweje.

Windsor and surrounding areas have numerous homeless and displaced people who call it their home and are in a desperate need to self-isolate during the lockdown.

She added that the centre was desperately in need of dry goods, non-perishables, mielie meal, baked beans, meat, and anything that could provide meals and dignity in the form of personal cleaning products to those homeless and displaced people making use of the centre.

“We also have very limited staff, so we are appealing to NGOs who work in the care industry and have human resources as essential staff to provide and care for the displaced persons. We need people to help to cook for them and help to provide whatever they can if they have the capacity.”

Weweje said the appeal was only for community members, businesses and NGOs who have the right to perform essential services.

“We are also in desperate need of a two-plate gas burner and bottle. Blankets and toiletries would also be much appreciated. This list of needs is actually exhausting.”

She said anyone who could contribute towards the cause was welcome to contact her directly.

“We really need our community to come together in this time of need, and we will be so grateful to anyone who can help.”
