Covid-19: Gauteng Health Department confirms 62 German tourists under quarantine

NEWLANDS – According to news reports, three other passengers on the bus showed signs of Covid-19 symptoms.

The Gauteng Health Department has confirmed that a group of German tourists have been placed under quarantine after one of them tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement, the Gauteng Health said, “One member of the group who tested positive for Covid-19 is currently at a health facility in Gauteng.”

The statement said that Port Health Services were alerted that the group had planned to leave the country on Thursday, 26 March, which led to them being grounded.

Forty-seven members of the group are already being quarantined, while 15 other members were transported by bus from Newlands to Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital on 27 March.  “Due to the limited quarantine space, separate arrangements were made to have 15 other members of the group accommodated at one of Gauteng’s health facilities and they are under quarantine.”

According to the health department, the group was not being cooperative, steps were taken to prevent exposure and they have asked the public to adhere to the lockdown measures.

South Africa is currently on day one of the 21-day lockdown, now with confirmed Covid-19 cases passing the 1 000 mark, with the first two deaths being announced.
